Brilliant

Billions of miles away
A star burns brightly
Far more intensely
Than I can possibly comprehend.

Furiously it burns
Frantically it shines
In desperate hopes to grace my eye
With a single ray of light.

Of the billions of rays of light
Radiating from the brilliant sphere
Many are sent off in random directions
Doomed to nothing but the blackness.

But the rays understand
Their demise is for the greater good
At their expense, one ray might succeed
And meet its distant destination.

Some of the rays come very close
Their long pilgirmage is ended
When they land inches from my eye
And to their dismay, they were not chosen.

But one ray of light was chosen
Its angle so perfect
Its beauty so astonishing
Truly, the only ray worth looking at.

I sometimes wish I hadn't closed my eyes.
